University of Cape Town ranked best University in Africa South Africa’s University of Cape Town has once again been ranked the best university in Africa ahead of second placed University of the Witwatersrand, also South African, in The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.. The University of Ghana notably came at 7th best university in Africa making it the topmost University in the West Africa sub-region, and indeed at the national level. The ranking placed East African giant, Uganda’s Makerere University at fourth, making it the only institution outside South Africa to make the top five.
